Our Technical Operations organization delivers Merck Serono’s highly specialized treatments to patients around the world with an unwavering commitment to excellence in all operations around making products.
We achieve this with a complete mastery of two very different production technologies: chemical synthesis of small molecules for traditional pharmaceuticals and biotech production of protein therapeutics using mammalian cells. The capability to develop and manufacture new biological entities (NBEs) and new chemical entities (NCEs) with equal expertise allows us to exploit the full potential of the biological and chemical spheres at every stage of the drug development process.
In addition to manufacturing Merck Serono’s wide range of medicines and drug-delivery devices, our teams also manage the complex logistics involved in a global supply chain, so that when a doctor prescribes a medicine, it is available for the patient who needs it.
Technical Operations spans other vital areas as well. When research scientists need to produce enough of an experimental molecule for the first laboratory tests, our teams can offer the right expertise. And when larger amounts of a potential drug are needed for clinical trials, internal experts can scale up the process, always with an unwavering commitment to excellence and quality. Our engineers and technicians also play a pivotal role in developing innovative drug delivery devices that can make a huge difference in the patient’s quality of life and in the successful outcome of the therapy.
Across our global network of sites on four continents, we share one common goal: providing products of the highest quality to customers and patients. Continuous improvement of overall performance is ensured through an Operational Excellence program with state-of-the-art methodologies such as Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma. Merck Serono’s worldwide production sites are compliant with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). By the end of 2010, all Merck Serono Technical Operations sites will be operating under ISO 14001:2004, the international environmental standard for excellence.
