We had six treatment cycles: your hopes build right up and then, when it doesn’t work, they come crashing right down again. It’s tough on the relationship as well. Both partners feel inadequate and responsible for failure.
So when Ewan was born after we’d been trying for 12 years... well, every time I see him, I think he’s a miracle. Even now.
He’s transformed our lives personally and he’s given me the confidence to strike out on a new path professionally too. I give a lot of talks and lectures and now I include my personal story.
It was surprisingly hard to start with - there’s still a social taboo surrounding infertility – but one in ten couples are affected by it and millions of people around the world suffer terribly from it.
I feel a very strong responsibility to speak out so others can learn about the issue and get treatment if they need it.
