Bernhard Kirschbaum
Bernhard Kirschbaum, PhD, is Executive Vice President, Head of Global Research and Early Development for Merck Serono. He is also a member of the Phamaceutical Executive Committee. 
Dr. Kirschbaum joined Merck KGaA in 2005 and was previously Vice President in Pre-clinical R&D and Head of Global Technologies. 
Prior to joining Merck, Dr. Kirschbaum was Vice President Discovery Research, Global Head of Therapeutic Domains “Thrombosis & Angiogenesis” for Sanofi-Aventis. He also worked for Aventis, Hoechst Marion Roussel in various senior positions and headed the Centre of Applied Genomics in Martinsried.
Dr. Kirschbaum studied and researched intensively in biochemistry and physiological chemistry at the University of Konstanz in Germany, receiving his PhD in 1989.  He also worked at the Rockefeller University (New York) and the Pasteur Institute (Paris). Dr. Kirschbaum subsequently focused his investigations within the drug development industry in areas such as rheumatic and autoimmune diseases, as well as thrombotic, angiogenesis and degenerative joint disorders.
Dr. Kirschbaum was born in Germany, where he now lives with his family.
