Belén Garijo, MD, is Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer for Merck Serono. Dr. Garijo is also a member of the Pharmaceutical Executive Committee.
Prior to joining Merck Serono, Dr. Garijo was Senior Vice President, Global Operations Region Europe at Sanofi from 2006, based in Paris, and served as Global Integration Leader for the Genzyme integration.
Belén Garijo began her career at Abbott Laboratories as Medical Director of its Spanish affiliate before moving to the US to head Global Medical Affairs at Abbott headquarters in Illinois. After joining Rhone Poulenc Rorer in 1996 as Business Unit Director of Oncology in Spain, she was promoted in 2000 to the position of Global Vice President Oncology with Aventis, based in New Jersey. Dr. Garijo was appointed General Manager of Aventis Spain in 2003, leading the integration towards Sanofi-Aventis in 2004 and subsequently serving as General Manager of Sanofi-Aventis Spain. She was elected CEO of the year in Spain in 2009.
Dr. Garijo is a medical doctor who specialized in clinical pharmacology (1984-1989). She obtained her degree in 1983 from the University of Alcalá de Henares
